Grey Bathroom Ideas

Grey bathrooms have been trending for quite some time. They are modern and elegant. There are many different options and details to take into consideration when designing a grey bathroom.

I am Jorge Fontan an architect in New York and owner of Fontan Architecture. In this post I am going to discuss a few ideas for grey bathroom design from some of our projects.

3D Accent Tile

If you are making an all grey bathroom you may want to add some depth to the overall design. You can physically add depth by using 3D Tiles. These are tiles that have 3 dimensional characteristics. one important point to take into consideration is that these tiles may not be easy to wrap around corners and in some cases impossible to make corners work. In the bathroom below you can see the 3D tiles we used were against the back wall and butt up to the sides. This avoids the problem of mitering corners.

Add Contrast

Adding a bit of contrast can enhance a bathroom design and make certain elements pop. There are different ways to create contrast, you can contrast in color, material, texture, and style. In the picture below you can see a grey bathroom with a wood vanity and porcelain wood look 3D tiles. Adding these elements creates a more dramatic feel of depth and character in this bathroom design.

Concrete Bathroom

Concrete is a common material that has been growing in popularity for interior design. If you are interested in making an all grey bathroom you may want to look at concrete bathrooms. Concrete textures and finishes can be applied to the bathroom walls to create a concrete look in the bathroom that is both modern and minimalist. The concrete finishes can have varying levels of texture from rough to smooth. This is a very modern grey bathroom aesthetic.

I have another blog post on concrete bathroom design if you want to read more about Concrete Bathrooms.

Grey Porcelain Bathroom Tiles

Porcelain is a very popular material right now for many reasons. One is that it is durable and long lasting. Porcelain does not absorb like natural stone. The other reason is that it comes in so many finishes that you will probably be able to find something you like in a porcelain tile showroom. Porcelain tile comes in many different grey finishes from concrete looks to solid grey.

The picture below is of a grey porcelain bathroom. These tiles are from Porcelanosa.

Monolithic Grey Bathroom

A monolithic bathroom is one where all the walls and floor are the same material and color. This is a very specific look. It is also a very modern and minimalist look. Monolithic bathrooms are very clean, simple, and modern.

Texture

Adding texture is another way to add depth and character to a bathroom design. You can use tiles with variations, and texture to completely change the way a bathroom looks.

Add Wood

All grey bathrooms can feel quite cold. One way to counter this affect is to add some warmth in the form of wood. Even dark or grey woods will feel warm in comparison to an all grey bathroom. A small touch of natural materials can enhance the feel of any grey bathroom design.

Black Details

Black goes very well with grey. You can always incorporate black details or black materials into your grey bathroom.

Add Color

A little color and contrast can help the bathroom design especially for all grey bathrooms.

In the picture below you can see a vibrant orange stained wood door to an all grey bathroom. This has a really great feel to it adding a surprise of color that works well with the overall design.

Grey Bathroom Design

As an architect, I study design and construction, but these are complicated and quite involved issues. Every project is different and must be assessed on its own unique characteristics. This post does not assume to cover every possible issue or condition, but provide a general overview of the topic.
