Bathroom remodeling is one of the most important parts of a home renovation. There are many different directions you can go when redoing your bathrooms.
I am Jorge Fontan an architect in New York and owner of Fontan Architecture an NYC-based architecture and design firm. At our office we work on various project types including residential renovations. In this post I will show a few of our bathroom renovations while pointing out a few key factors in their design.
Upper East Side Marble Slab Bathroom
In this bathroom remodel we combined two small bathrooms that were next to each other to create this larger more luxurious bathroom. A key design feature here is that the walls are all made of marble slabs. I love a marble slab bathroom it is really the most luxurious and stunning bathroom design option.
You can see in the photo below that this bathroom is not made of tiles but with large slabs of marble that extend the entire width of the wall. There are no grout lines or joints. This is a really great look to balance classic elegance and modern sleekness.
The free standing tub also adds a great deal of character to this bathroom.
No bathroom is complete without shower niches. Marble slab walls make for the best looking shower niches as they look so natural and continuous.
The photo below is of the niches in this slab bathroom wall. You can see how seamless it looks due to the slab wall. The marble pieces are all miter cut to meet at forty-five degree angles so that you cannot see any edges of the stone.
Opposite the tub wall is the sink. Almost everything in this bathroom renovation was custom made including the sink and vanity. The sink is custom made of the same marble slab as the wall and sits on top of a custom cabinet in white oak with brass pulls. Custom work is the only real way to achieve a luxurious and bespoke bathroom.
Grey Bathroom in a Chelsea Loft
This first bathroom is in a Loft in Chelsea. The owners wanted to add a second bathroom and renovate the master bath. This grey bathroom is the master. We designed it to be generally simple and modern with a bit of a textural feel to work with the fact that this is in a loft. Lofts are former commercial or industrial buildings that have been converted to residential. They often have lots of material and texture. The tiles are all porcelain on the walls and floors. It is a weathered look porcelain tile that has a great feel to it.
There are two different tones of tiles. The shower is a darker more textured tile with a 3D tile accent. And the smoother lighter grey tile. The sink top is white and the vanity is a modern wood floating vanity. Wood can be a great addition to a modern bathroom. Texture and materials bring life to an otherwise sanitary space.
The fixtures are all polished chrome against a rich detailed textured tile. Coordinating fixtures is an important aspect to any modern bathroom design.
Concrete Bathroom in the Financial District
This next bathroom is a bit more unique in that it is a concrete bathroom. The walls and floors are both a concrete finish applied to the walls. This is a very modern and industrial bathroom design.
The concrete walls are monolithic without any seems, this makes for a very minimalist yet textural feel. The concrete in the bathroom should be smooth whereas in the rest of this concrete apartment we used much more textured concrete with a rough feel.
Details make or break any architectural or interior design. In this bathroom we used a linear drain for a minimalist and clean look.
NYC Bathroom Renovations
As an architect, I study design and construction, but these are complicated and quite involved issues. Every project is different and must be assessed on its own unique characteristics. This post does not assume to cover every possible issue or condition, but provide a general overview of the topic.
