Designing a luxury bathroom requires a high level of customization and the use of natural materials. Every element is considered as part of a cohesive architectural composition.
Custom stone sinks are a defining feature in a luxury bathroom. Materials such as marble, travertine, onyx, and granite bring depth, variation, and a sense of permanence to the space. These choices shape the character of the room and contribute to a refined, integrated interior.
I am Jorge Fontan, a New York architect and owner of Fontan Architecture. Our office works on residential renovations and new homes, regularly incorporating custom stone sinks into fully detailed bathroom designs. Below are examples of our work featuring custom stone sink installations.

Travertine Sink in a Monolithic Bathroom
Travertine is a natural material well suited to bathroom design. It has an inherent elegance and richness. We prefer to work with large slabs, which allow for more continuous surfaces and reduce the number of joints.
You can see below a bathroom we designed entirely in travertine slabs, including the sink. The design features a long countertop with two integrated basins. A key feature of this bathroom is the strong geometric statement created by the scale of the sink and countertop. The monolithic use of travertine, extending across the sink, walls, and floor, creates a cohesive and refined space.

Unique Marble Sink
Marble offers a wide range of variation in color and veining, making each piece distinct. The selection of the stone is an integral part of the design process.
Below is a powder room with a green marble sink. For this project, we selected the slab directly from the stone yard, allowing us to control the exact color, pattern, and veining used in fabrication. This level of selection contributes to the precision and quality of the final design.

Curved Onyx Powder Room Sink
Stone is typically fabricated from flat slabs, which allows for more efficient construction and lower cost. Curved forms require more complex fabrication, such as carving from a solid block, which increases the level of labor involved.
Curved surfaces can be achieved through techniques such as faceting or through carving solid stone, depending on the desired result.
Below is a custom onyx sink with a curved front from the powder room of a luxury apartment we designed.

Custom Marble Bathroom Sink
Custom elements allow for a higher level of control over proportion, detailing, and material relationships within the space. I consider custom design, combined with high-quality materials and meticulous craftsmanship, to be the defining features of a luxury bathroom.
Below is a double-integrated marble sink set over a custom wood vanity with brass detailing. The alignment of materials and proportions creates a cohesive composition, with the sink and vanity designed as a single integrated element.

Black Granite Integrated Sink
Granite offers a depth and density that lends itself well to darker, more atmospheric interiors. Its tonal variation and texture contribute to a more grounded and substantial material presence, with the added advantage of durability.
In this bathroom, we aimed for a dark and moody aesthetic. The sink is fabricated in black granite and integrated wall-to-wall with the countertop, reinforcing the horizontal continuity of the space. It serves as a strong architectural feature within the overall composition.

Integrated Sink and Countertop
An integrated sink is formed from the same material as the countertop, creating a continuous and unified surface.
We often incorporate this approach to achieve a more cohesive and controlled design. Below is a marble sink integrated into a long countertop over a custom cabinet with two basins, reinforcing the horizontal composition of the space.

Seamless Details
Seamless fabrication is a key detail in modern and minimalist bathroom design. We design these sinks without visible joints, working with skilled fabricators to achieve a clean and continuous finish.
In this example, the sink appears to be carved from a single block of stone. In reality, it is constructed from stone slabs that are miter-cut and assembled to create that effect.

Under Sink Shelf
In addition to cabinetry, an open shelf can be incorporated below the sink to provide storage while maintaining a more minimal and open composition.
In this bathroom, the travertine sink is paired with a matching stone shelf. The shelf is designed as a floating element, reinforcing the material continuity and reading as a stone plane extending from the wall.

Custom Stone Sink Design Ideas
The design of a custom stone sink should be considered as part of the overall bathroom composition. Material selection, proportion, and detailing are developed together to create a cohesive result.
At Fontan Architecture we approach bathroom design as a complete composition, where each element is resolved in relation to the whole. The sink, vanity, and surrounding materials are designed together to ensure clarity and continuity in the final space.
