I am Jorge Fontan, an architect and owner of Fontan Architecture, a Manhattan-based architecture and interior design firm specializing in luxury home design. In this article, I share several custom kitchens from our projects in New York City, each demonstrating a different approach to luxury kitchen design. Flatiron District: Bespoke Kitchen With a One-of-a-Kind Island

For a kitchen to be truly luxurious, it should be a bespoke design specifically tailored to the owners’ needs, preferences, and lifestyle. This first kitchen is a highly personalized design that we created specifically for a client with a unique set of requests. This project was a gut renovation of a 4,000-square-foot loft in the Flatiron District. The owner asked for a home with rich materiality, including dark finishes and subtle industrial references, which was especially appropriate for a loft apartment. The owner also requested that there be no dining table in the home and that both formal and casual dining be incorporated entirely into the kitchen.

 

This was our first time designing a home without a dining table, but we used that challenge as inspiration to create what turned out to be a one-of-a-kind kitchen with a very special three-tiered island. We made sure that the materiality and scale complemented the rest of the home. This is one of the reasons we provide full-service architecture and interior design, allowing us to create a home with complete continuity.

We divided the island into three distinct sections, each with a different height and material to differentiate its programmatic function. First, on the right, is the bar area. This portion of the island is built at bar height and features a leathered black granite countertop. The center section is an oak dining table set at a lower height to conform to standard dining table proportions. Finally, the serving area is built at standard counter height and features a gray marble countertop.

 

Tribeca Penthouse: Warm Contemporary Kitchen with Refined Details

The highest level of design can come from restraint, where careful proportions, natural materials, and thoughtful detailing create a space that feels calm, balanced, and timeless. This custom kitchen was designed as part of a full renovation of a duplex penthouse in Tribeca. Every design decision was made specifically for the homeowners, resulting in a kitchen that reflects their lifestyle while maintaining continuity with the architecture of the residence.

The material palette combines eucalyptus wood cabinetry, natural stone, and warm metal accents to create a sophisticated yet inviting atmosphere. The materials were selected to complement one another, allowing the natural character of each finish to become the focus of the design.

 

The detailing throughout the kitchen is intentionally restrained. Metal reveals at the cabinetry, integrated lighting, slab stone surfaces, and carefully proportioned millwork establish crisp lines and subtle shadow gaps that reinforce the architectural composition. Glass display cabinets introduce depth and warmth without disrupting the clean geometry of the space, while the full-height stone backsplash strengthens the sense of continuity. Natural materials provide warmth, enhancing the inviting character of the kitchen.

The result is a kitchen that feels elegant without being extravagant. Every element contributes to the overall composition, demonstrating how thoughtful architecture, refined materials, and precise detailing can create a luxury kitchen that is both timeless and welcoming.

 

Manhattan Historic Brownstone: Contemporary Kitchen Design Within a Classic Home

The owners of this home wanted to preserve the character that makes a brownstone special while creating a kitchen grounded in contemporary living. Rather than recreating a traditional kitchen or introducing an overly modern design, our goal was to find a thoughtful balance between old and new.

We designed the kitchen with timeless proportions and a restrained material palette that complements the architecture of the home. Warm brass fixtures and hardware introduce a sense of tradition, while integrated appliances, full-height slab backsplashes, and custom cabinetry provide the visual impact, function, and convenience expected in a modern luxury residence. Every design decision was made to respect the history of the house while allowing the kitchen to feel contemporary rather than historicized.

 

The most enduring designs within a historic home acknowledge the character of the original architecture while adapting it to the way people live today. This kitchen reflects that philosophy, combining contemporary performance with materials and details that feel appropriate within the context of a historic New York City brownstone.

 

Upper East Side Apartment: Custom Details That Elevate the Design

The difference between a good kitchen and an exceptional one is often found in the details. While the overall composition establishes the character of a space, it is the careful refinement of individual elements that creates a sense of craftsmanship, individuality, and permanence. This Upper East Side apartment was designed with a focus on custom detailing, where every visible junction, edge, and material transition was carefully considered.

The kitchen achieves its character through precision and restraint. The cabinetry was designed with custom brass finger pulls integrated directly into the doors, creating a clean and refined appearance while eliminating the need for conventional hardware. The natural wood cabinetry is paired with warm brass accents, stone slab surfaces, and integrated lighting, producing a layered composition that feels sophisticated without being overstated.

 

The stone island was fabricated with a custom stepped edge profile that gives the countertop greater depth and presence. Small details like this require close coordination between the architect, fabricator, and installer, but they are often what distinguish a truly bespoke kitchen from a standard installation. We gave similar attention to the cabinetry, where we carefully coordinated reveals, alignments, and proportions that create a calm and cohesive composition.

Luxury is rarely defined by a single dramatic gesture. More often, it is the accumulation of many thoughtful decisions, each executed with precision. This kitchen demonstrates how carefully designed details, quality materials, and disciplined craftsmanship can elevate a contemporary kitchen into a timeless architectural space.
